The 2002 Ohio quarter obverse (Head) features Washington’s side view along with the inscription United States of America – LIBERTY – In God We Trust – Quarter Dollar. The reverse (tail) features an airplane to the left, an astronaut to the right, and the state outline in the background along with the inscription Ohio 1803 – 2002 – E Pluribus Unum – Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers.

Orville Wright, a pioneer in aviation who invented and flew the first successful airplane, was born in Ohio which the airplane on the coin represents. The astronaut is a representation of Neil Armstrong, one of the most well-known astronauts. They were both born in Ohio. Ohio was given the title “Birthplace of Aviation Pioneers” for this reason.
