⚠️
Silver Plated vs. Solid Silver
Items marked "silver plated," "EPNS," "EP," or "quadruple plate" contain
almost no silver. Only items marked "925," "Sterling," or ".999" are solid silver worth
selling for melt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Use a digital scale that measures in grams for best accuracy. Kitchen scales work for rough
estimates, but a jewelry scale (0.01g precision) is ideal for small items. Most coin shops
and jewelers will weigh items for free if you're considering selling. Always remove
non-silver components like stainless steel knife blades before weighing.
Pawn shops have high overhead costs (rent, staff, insurance) and need profit margins for
resale. They're also generalists who may not specialize in precious metals. Refineries pay
more because they process metal directly and operate on volume with lower margins. The
convenience of a pawn shop comes at a significant cost—often 30-50% less than you'd get
elsewhere.
Sterling flatware (marked 925 or Sterling) absolutely has silver value. However, be aware
that weighted pieces (like candlesticks or hollow-handle knives) contain cement or resin for
stability—only the outer shell is silver. Knife blades are typically stainless steel. A full
sterling flatware set can contain several pounds of silver worth hundreds or thousands of
dollars.
It depends. Scrap buyers typically pay nothing for stones since they're buying for metal
value only. If your piece has valuable gems (diamonds, rubies, sapphires), consider having
them appraised separately. For costume jewelry stones, cubic zirconia, or small accent
stones, it's usually not worth the effort—the metal value is what matters.
Precious metals are measured in troy ounces (31.1 grams), not regular avoirdupois ounces
(28.35 grams). This calculator handles the conversion automatically. When you see silver
prices quoted "per ounce," they always mean troy ounces. This is an important distinction—a
troy ounce is about 10% heavier than a regular ounce.
